Lake Petén Itzá is a large freshwater lake in Guatemala’s Petén Department, located in the lowland rainforest of northern Guatemala. The lake is a regional centre for settlement, transport and tourism in Petén.

The lake is notable for the town of Flores, which occupies a small island or peninsula on the lake and is connected to the mainland by a short causeway; the town provides hotels, restaurants and boat services. The lakeshore and nearby villages serve as staging points for visits to Maya archaeological sites and for freshwater recreation such as boating and fishing.

Pre-Columbian Maya communities occupied the shores of the lake for centuries, and one of the last independent Maya polities persisted in the area until the late 17th century. During the colonial and modern periods the lakeshore towns grew as local trading and transport centres, and in the 20th and 21st centuries tourism linked to nearby Maya sites became economically important.

Geographically the lake sits in the Petén lowlands, surrounded by humid tropical forest and low karst hills. The nearest regional centre is Flores, which functions as the main settlement and access point for the lake and surrounding archaeological attractions.

  • Visitor hub: Serves as the gateway town for visitors to northern Petén archaeological sites such as Tikal, with regular boat and road connections from the lake shore.

What to See #

  • Flores island: A compact island settlement that forms the historic centre of the town of Flores and sits on the lake close to the western shore, linked to the mainland by a causeway.
