Lake Péligre
Lake Haitian reservoir formed by Péligre hydroelectric dam
Formed by the Péligre Dam on the Artibonite River, Lake Péligre draws visitors for shoreline views, local fishing communities and study of Haiti’s rural landscapes.
Lake Péligre is a reservoir in Haiti’s Centre department formed by impoundment of the Artibonite River. It exists because of the Péligre Dam and functions as a managed reservoir rather than a natural lake.
The reservoir is important for hydroelectric power production and irrigation in central Haiti and is a major inland water body for the region. It is also a focal point for local fishing and communities that depend on the lake’s resources.
The lake was created when the Péligre Dam was constructed on the Artibonite River in the 20th century; the dam and reservoir altered the river’s flow and created the present impoundment used for power and water management.
Geographically it lies in central Haiti in the Centre department. The reservoir occupies a valley formed by the Artibonite River and is a prominent feature of the department’s inland landscape.
- Reservoir function: forms a reservoir behind the Péligre Dam on the Artibonite River, serving hydroelectric generation and irrigation for surrounding areas.
- Central Haiti location: located in Haiti's Centre department and is one of the country's largest artificial lakes created by river impoundment.
How to Get to Lake Péligre #
From Port‑au‑Prince, drive north along RN3 toward Mirebalais (about 1.5-2 hours depending on conditions), then continue toward Hinche; local roads lead to the Péligre area. Road conditions vary widely; 4x4 vehicles are recommended. Buses and tap‑taps run on major routes but will not take travelers directly to many reservoir settlements - hire local transport from Mirebalais or Hinche.
Tips for Visiting Lake Péligre #
- Hire a local guide in Mirebalais or Hinche to visit fishing villages around the reservoir - many roads are rough and the social history is complex.
- Bring cash and extra fuel: fuel stations near the lake are intermittent and ATMs are scarce in rural Centre department.
- When photographing the shoreline, ask permission; many communities on the reservoir edge were displaced and images can carry weight.
