Lake Peipus

Lake Large transboundary lake between Estonia and Russia

Straddling the Estonia-Russia border, Lake Peipus is one of Europe’s largest lakes; visitors come for fishing, migratory birds, seasonal ice roads and lakeside villages that preserve Old Believer and local fishing traditions.

Main image

Lake Peipus (Peipsi in Estonian) is a large shallow freshwater lake on the border between Estonia and Russia. It is one of Northern Europe’s major lakes and forms a long east-west water body dividing Estonian and Russian territory.

The lake is relatively shallow and supports extensive fisheries, wetlands and seasonal ice cover in winter. It is a regionally important resource for local communities and has several small ports, fishing villages and islands in its basins.

Historically the frozen surface was the setting for the 1242 Battle on the Ice, a notable medieval military engagement. The lake remains important for cross-border livelihoods, fisheries and low-intensity tourism.

Geographically it lies along Estonia’s eastern boundary and drains into the Narva River to the north; the lake spans multiple administrative regions on both the Estonian and Russian sides.

  • Size and border position: A large transboundary freshwater lake shared by Estonia and Russia with an overall surface area of roughly 3,500 square kilometres.
  • Historic battle site: Famous as the site of the 1242 Battle on the Ice fought on the frozen lake between Novgorod forces and the Livonian/Teutonic knights.

How to Get to Lake Peipus #

Lake Peipus (Peipsi/Pihkva) is reached from the Estonian city of Tartu by driving east into the lake’s many shore towns. Regional roads connect Tartu with lakeside towns such as Mustvee and Kallaste; regular regional buses run from Tartu to these towns. From the smaller towns the shore and local piers are typically a short walk (often under 1 km) from the bus stops.

Tips for Visiting Lake Peipus #

  • Plan a visit in late spring through summer for boating, fishing and village access, and in late autumn/winter if your focus is migratory birdwatching - Pärnu-Mustvee areas are focal points on the Estonian side.
  • Use Estonian access towns such as Mustvee and Kallaste as practical bases with harbors and local boat operators rather than attempting to reach remote shores directly from smaller villages.
  • Birding and reed‑bed scenery are what many visitors overlook: seek out local observation hides and guided bird‑watching trips (especially during migration) rather than only skimming the lake from the main towns.
