Lake Pátzcuaro

Lake Pátzcuaro is a highland lake in Michoacán, Mexico, fringed by towns and villages historically associated with the Purépecha people. It is a regional cultural and natural landmark with several inhabited islands.

The lake is commonly visited for boat trips to islands such as Janitzio, local markets and lakeside promenades in the town of Pátzcuaro; island viewpoints offer sweeping views of the lake and surrounding hills. Local crafts and cultural events in lakeside towns draw many visitors.

The lake basin has been settled since pre-Hispanic times and was central to the Purépecha state; since colonial times the lakeshore towns developed as administrative and religious centres. Over the 19th and 20th centuries the lake area retained strong local cultural traditions and remained an important regional resource.

Geographically the lake lies on the Mexican high plateau in central Michoacán, adjacent to the town of Pátzcuaro and surrounded by hills and agricultural land.

• Island boats: Boat services run from the town of Pátzcuaro to the islands; the short crossings are the usual way for visitors to reach Janitzio.
• Elevation: The lake sits on a highland plateau and is at an elevation of roughly 2,000 metres above sea level, which gives local climate and vegetation distinct highland characteristics.

• Janitzio Island: The largest and best-known island on the lake, home to a prominent monumental statue and offering panoramic views back to the lakeshore town; boats run frequently from the town to the island.
