Lake Notoro is a coastal lagoon on the Sea of Okhotsk coast of northeastern Hokkaido, Japan, close to the city of Abashiri. The shallow, brackish waterbody lies between the coastline and barrier beaches and is noted for its seasonal sea ice in winter.

The lagoon and adjacent marshes support birdlife and coastal vegetation and are used for birdwatching and shoreline walks; local facilities in Abashiri provide access for short excursions. In winter the Sea of Okhotsk produces drift ice that reaches the coast and becomes a seasonal attraction for visitors.

The waterbody is a naturally formed coastal lagoon shaped by longshore processes and river inflow rather than by human engineering. It lies within the broader coastal landscape of eastern Hokkaido and is accessed from Abashiri and nearby coastal roads.

Lake Notoro sits immediately north of Abashiri city in Hokkaido Prefecture, opening to or facing the Sea of Okhotsk on Japan’s northeastern coast.

  • Drift ice season: Forms part of the coastal wetlands near Abashiri and faces the Sea of Okhotsk, where winter drift ice often reaches the shore between January and March.
