Lake No
Lake Seasonal lake at Nile-Sudd junction in South Sudan
Lake No sits in northern South Sudan’s floodplain as a shallow freshwater lake at river junctions; local fishing, seasonal wetlands and boat travel characterise visits to the surrounding reed beds.
Lake No is a shallow freshwater lake in Unity State, South Sudan, located where major Nile tributaries meet the northern edge of the Sudd wetlands. It is a locally important junction within the Nile-sudd drainage system.
The lake functions as a seasonal hub for fishing, small-scale navigation and grazing along its marshy shores. Water extent and channels around the lake expand and contract with the annual flood cycle, making access and routes variable through the year.
Historically the lake has formed part of traditional water- and grazing-lands used by communities in the region and has long been associated with riverine transport along the Nile system. Its shape and extent have changed seasonally rather than through large engineered modifications.
Lake No lies at the northern fringe of the Sudd wetlands in central South Sudan, within Unity State. It occupies low-lying marsh and floodplain terrain where distributaries of the White Nile interconnect.
- Hydrology: Sits at the junction of major Nile tributaries and the Sudd wetlands, with strongly seasonal water-level changes that affect local navigation and fisheries.
