Lake Ngami
Lake Seasonal lake supporting birds and local fisheries
Lake Ngami, an intermittent lake fed by the Okavango, attracts birdwatchers and photographers to reed-fringed shores, seasonal floodplain wildlife and remote lodge access.
Lake Ngami is a shallow, seasonal lake in northwest Botswana that periodically fills during wet years and after high flows in regional river systems. The lake supports waterbirds and attracts wildlife when it contains water, functioning as a temporary wetland in an otherwise arid landscape.
Historically the lake was an important inland water body for local communities and for wildlife movements, but its extent now varies greatly with climate and hydrological conditions. Access and sightings of birds and mammals depend on recent rainfall patterns and the lake’s current state.
Lake Ngami lies southwest of the Okavango Delta in northern Botswana and is part of the broader seasonal wetland systems of the region; the area is accessed from local towns and by four-wheel-drive tracks.
- Variable water levels: Lake levels are highly variable and the lake fills mainly in response to above-average regional rainfall or overflow from the Okavango system; it can be extensive in wet years and largely dry in drought years.
Tips for Visiting Lake Ngami #
- Visit in seasons or years when the lake has water - Lake Ngami is ephemeral and birdlife is best and most reliable after good rains and seasonal inflows, so check recent conditions before planning.
- Use Maun or nearby towns as your access hub and arrange a local 4x4 operator who knows the variable tracks and can position you at the best birding/photography spots when water levels are favorable.
- If water is present, plan early‑morning or late‑afternoon outings for the best bird activity and light; when dry, focus on nearby inhabited sites and landscapes rather than expecting an open lake.
Best Time to Visit Lake Ngami #
Timing depends on lake levels; for the best chance of seeing Lake Ngami with water, visit in the months following the summer rains (roughly Feb-Jun), keeping in mind levels vary yearly.
