Lake Natron
Lake Alkaline lake important for flamingo breeding colonies
Lake Natron in northern Tanzania features alkaline flats and soda-ash shoreline where saline waters often support large flamingo colonies. Travelers visit for birdwatching, stark salt pans and the Rift Valley landscape rather than conventional beaches.
Lake Natron is a shallow, alkaline soda lake in northern Tanzania, located in the eastern branch of the East African Rift. The lake’s high pH and mineral composition create striking red and pink hues and extensive salt-encrusted shorelines in dry conditions.
The chemical environment supports unique algae and microorganisms that provide food for large populations of lesser flamingos; the lake is internationally noted for these seasonal breeding aggregations. Thermal springs and evaporation concentrate carbonate salts, which contribute to the lake’s alkalinity.
The lake sits in a remote rift valley setting north of the Ngorongoro Highlands and south of the Kenyan border, fringed by volcanic features including the nearby Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano. Access is by road from regional towns in northern Tanzania.
- Flamingo breeding: Regularly used as a breeding site by large flocks of lesser flamingos, which are attracted by abundant cyanobacteria and alkaliphilic organisms.
