Lake Nasser is a vast artificial reservoir in southern Egypt formed by the construction of the Aswan High Dam on the Nile. It extends southward from the dam and continues across the border into northern Sudan where it is known as Lake Nubia.

The reservoir stretches for several hundred kilometres and stores water for irrigation, flood control and power generation, transforming the hydrology of the Nile in this region. The lake supports fisheries and provides year-round water availability for downstream agriculture.

The dam and reservoir were completed in the mid-20th century and necessitated the relocation of archaeological sites and the resettlement of Nubian communities; international efforts moved some major temples to avoid inundation. Lake Nasser now forms a distinctive, arid-water landscape in southern Egypt and northern Sudan.

The lake runs south from the Aswan area into northern Sudan and dominates the flat desert margins around Aswan and the surrounding governorate.

  • Relocated monuments: The creation of the reservoir required large-scale resettlement and the relocation of several ancient monuments to higher ground, most famously the temples at Abu Simbel.
