Lake Moeris is the classical name for the body of water now called Lake Qarun in the Faiyum Oasis west of the Nile in Egypt; it was an important water body for ancient irrigation and settlement.
Today the lake and its shores are visited for birdwatching and to access nearby archaeological sites in the Faiyum region. The modern lake is saline and lies within an agricultural oasis landscape.
In antiquity the lake was reshaped and connected to the Nile by engineered canals such as the Bahr Yussef and was an important part of Pharaonic irrigation and fisheries; classical authors referred to it as Lake Moeris.
The lake sits in the Faiyum Governorate west of the Nile, adjacent to the modern town of Faiyum in the Faiyum Oasis.
