Lake Minnetonka

Lake Minnetonka is a large lake west of Minneapolis in Minnesota composed of multiple connected bays, channels and islands and serves as a major regional recreational lake. It is surrounded by several lakeside towns and public parks used for boating, fishing and swimming.

The lake’s irregular shoreline creates many sheltered bays and inlets that are popular for private boating and waterfront homes; marinas and boat ramps provide access at multiple points around the lake. Public beaches and parks are located in the towns on the north and east shores.

Lake Minnetonka developed over post-glacial time and has long been used for transport, fishing and recreation; in the 19th and 20th centuries it became a popular weekend and seasonal destination for Minneapolis residents, prompting docks, hotels and later residential development along the shore.

Geographically the lake sits on the glacially scoured plain to the west of the Twin Cities metropolitan core and is within the suburban and exurban ring of towns that extend from Minneapolis.
