Lake Manyara National Park
Park National park famed for tree-climbing lions and flamingos
A compact park on the Rift escarpment known for its soda lake, tree‑climbing lions and large bird flocks. Game drives, birdwatching and proximity to Ngorongoro make it a common safari stop.
Lake Manyara National Park is a compact protected area in northern Tanzania centred on a shallow alkaline lake in the Rift Valley. It is known for high bird diversity, prominent tree-climbing lions and a mosaic of habitats within a small area.
Within the park visitors encounter a broad band of soda lake shoreline, groundwater-fed forest, acacia steppe and the rising escarpment of the Rift valley; this compressed variety allows wildlife viewing over short distances. The lakeshore attracts large numbers of waterbirds and flamingos when conditions are suitable, while forest and woodland support baboons, elephants and predators.
The park was established in the 20th century as a protected area to conserve the lake and surrounding habitats and has been managed for wildlife and tourism since that time. Management has focused on balancing grazing, hydrology and visitor access to sustain both wildlife and local livelihoods.
Lake Manyara National Park lies in northern Tanzania on the western branch of the Rift, north of the town of Karatu and west of the Ngorongoro Highlands; it is within driving distance of Arusha and the main northern safari circuit.
- Tree-climbing lions: Tree-climbing lions are a locally notable behaviour seen in the park; sightings are irregular but possible in the park's forested patches.
What to See #
- Soda lake: The park includes a shallow alkaline soda lake that fills the Rift valley floor and is a seasonal magnet for waterbirds, including large flocks of flamingos and other waders.
- Groundwater forest and wildlife zones: Groundwater-fed acacia and fig forest that supports troops of baboons, tree-climbing lions and a resident elephant population in relatively small, accessible patches of forest.
- Rift escarpment and terraces: The escarpment and terrace habitats form the park boundary and provide elevated viewpoints and habitats distinct from the lakeshore floodplain.
How to Get to Lake Manyara National Park #
Lake Manyara National Park is reached mainly by road from northern Tanzania hubs. Most visitors travel by car or safari transfer from Arusha or from the Ngorongoro/Serengeti circuit - tour operators run daily drives to the park (road transfer times vary; transfers from Arusha are commonly in the order of a few hours). There is also a small Manyara Airstrip (near Mto wa Mbu) used by light aircraft charters from Arusha and other northern‑Tanzania airstrips; charter flights land there and operators provide the onward park transfer.
Tips for Visiting Lake Manyara National Park #
- Enter the park early morning (park gates open before sunrise) for the best wildlife viewing and to increase your chances of seeing tree‑climbing lions and large game; late afternoon is the other productive window.
- Visit during the dry season (roughly June-October) when animals concentrate near water and visibility is better; book a guide/driver for the loop road to maximise sightings and to handle park logistics.
- Don't rush past the lakeshore: the soda lake edge and surrounding woodlands are rich with birdlife and smaller mammals that many safari itineraries overlook, so allow time specifically for the lakeshore stretch.
