Lake Magadi is an alkaline, saline lake in southern Kenya’s Rift Valley, in Kajiado County. The lake occupies an arid rift floor and is notable for its soda ash (trona) deposits and distinctive biological communities.
The lake environment supports large flocks of lesser flamingos that feed on algae and cyanobacteria in the shallow alkaline waters, and commercial trona extraction has taken place in the area for many decades. The lake is shallow and fluctuates in extent with seasonal rainfall, creating shimmering salt pans and mudflats.
Lake Magadi lies in the southern Kenyan Rift Valley within Kajiado County, south of Nairobi and near other Rift Valley lakes; the surrounding landscape is semi-arid and sparsely settled, with access from regional roads and routes serving mining and pastoral activities.

- Go at dawn or late afternoon when light on the soda pans is most photogenic and when any resident flamingos or shorebirds are most active; bird presence is seasonal and fluctuates with water levels.
- Approach via Magadi town and hire a local guide or driver familiar with Kajiado County access-many areas are on communal land and local knowledge helps find safe viewing points.
- Ask about seasonal changes: much of the landscape alternates between exposed soda flats and shallow water, so check with your guide which spots are currently best for wildlife and photography.
