Lake Lanao is a large freshwater lake in the southern Philippines on the island of Mindanao, and is the largest lake on Mindanao. It is an important ecological and cultural feature for surrounding communities.

The lake basin has been inhabited for centuries by the Maranao, who have developed a distinct cultural and economic life linked to the lake. In the 20th century the lake became integral to regional power generation through the development of the Agus hydroelectric complex.

Lake Lanao sits in the interior of Mindanao within the area administered historically as part of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, surrounded by mountainous terrain and the provincial centers of Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte.

  • Size and cultural importance: The lake is the largest on the island of Mindanao and is a primary freshwater reservoir and cultural heartland for the Maranao people.

What to See #

  • Agus River hydroelectric system: The outflowing Agus River system that drains the lake and feeds a chain of hydroelectric plants supplying power to northern Mindanao.
