Lake Jipe is a shallow freshwater lake that straddles the Kenya-Tanzania border in East Africa, located at about -3.58333 S, 37.75 E. It is smaller and more locally important than the major East African lakes.
The shoreline supports wetlands and reedbeds and is used by local communities; the lake and its margins are known for waterbirds and small-scale fishing. Facilities for international tourism are limited and most visits are from nearby towns on either side of the border.
Lake Jipe is a natural inland lake used historically and currently by nearby communities for fishing and subsistence use. It has not been the site of major construction or engineering works.
The lake lies on the Kenya-Tanzania border in the borderlands of northeastern Tanzania and southeastern Kenya, at the coordinates above. The surrounding terrain includes low hills and cultivated areas rather than large urban centres.
