Lake İznik is a freshwater lake in northwestern Turkey in Bursa Province, with the historic town of İznik (ancient Nicaea) on its eastern shore. The lake is an important local landmark with cultural and historical ties to the ancient and medieval city on its shore.

Shore visitors come for the town’s Byzantine walls, mosques and ruins, as well as lakeside walks and local food. The region is noted for İznik ceramics and tiles that were produced from the Ottoman period and earlier.

Historically the lakeshore hosted the ancient city of Nicaea, the site of notable Imperial and ecclesiastical events such as the First Council held in 325 AD. Over centuries the area remained inhabited through Byzantine and Ottoman rule and developed the pottery craft that gave the town wider renown.

Geographically the lake lies southwest of the Sea of Marmara, within Bursa Province; İznik town occupies the eastern shore and Bursa city is the nearest large urban centre to the northwest.

  • Cultural significance: The area is associated with the Councils of Nicaea, and the town is also long known for its historic İznik pottery and tile production.
