Lake Ichkeul
Lake Coastal Tunisian lake and UNESCO wetland refuge
Lake Ichkeul near Bizerte is a UNESCO-listed wetland and migratory-bird stopover; birdwatching hides, seasonal reed beds and a lakeside visitor route draw ornithologists and nature tours.
Lake Ichkeul is a lake and wetland complex in northern Tunisia’s Bizerte Governorate and the central feature of Ichkeul National Park. It is internationally recognised for its role as a stopover for migratory birds between Europe and Africa.
The site features seasonal changes in water salinity and extent that produce marshes and reedbeds used by tens of thousands of migratory and resident waterbirds. Visitors use park trails and viewpoints to observe birds and the lake’s changing habitats.
The area has been managed as a protected park to conserve its ecological functions and bird populations; water-level changes and human impacts have been the focus of conservation work in recent decades. The park combines lake, marsh and surrounding hills in a compact protected landscape.
Lake Ichkeul lies in northern Tunisia near the city of Bizerte, occupying a lowland basin with surrounding agricultural land and hills.
