Lake Huron
Lake Great Lake with extensive shoreline and Georgian Bay
Lake Huron’s long shoreline and Georgian Bay islands offer sailing, freshwater beaches, fishing and coastal hiking; Tobermory and the Bruce Peninsula lie on its Canadian shores.
Lake Huron is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, straddling the border between the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. state of Michigan. It has a very large surface area of roughly 59,600 km2 and includes extensive shoreline and numerous islands.
The lake offers long, varied coastlines, large bays and island groups. Georgian Bay on the eastern side contains a dense archipelago often described as having around 30,000 islands and granite shorelines popular with boaters. Manitoulin, covering about 2,766 km2, is a notable inland-island with several lakes within it and attracts visitors for hiking and cultural sites.
Historically the basin was carved by retreating glaciers at the end of the last ice age and has long been used by Indigenous peoples and later European fur traders and settlers. Over the 19th and 20th centuries it became important for commercial shipping, fisheries and regional transport, with ports and lighthouses established along its shores.
Geographically the lake sits between Ontario to the north and east and Michigan to the south and west, linking to Lake Michigan via the Straits of Mackinac to the west and to Lake Erie through the St. Clair River and Lake St. Clair to the south. Much of the Canadian shoreline faces forests and rugged rock, while the U.S. shore includes bays and lowland areas.
- Islands: Home to the world's largest freshwater island and a large archipelago in Georgian Bay, making it important for island cruising and freshwater ecology.
- Best time: Summer months offer sailing, swimming and cottage recreation while shoulder seasons are quieter; boat access is common to reach shorelines and islands.
What to See #
- Manitoulin Island: Covers about 2,766 km2 and is the largest freshwater island in the world, with multiple inland lakes including Lake Manitou.
- Georgian Bay: Large bay on the eastern side famous for a complex shoreline of roughly 30,000 islands and exposed Precambrian granite shorelines popular with boaters and cottagers.
- North Channel: A narrow cruising and island-hopping corridor along the northern Ontario shore prized by yachtsmen for sheltered waters and islands.
- Saginaw Bay: A shallow gulf on the U.S. side with extensive wetlands and fisheries that widens the lake's southern margin.
How to Get to Lake Huron #
Lake Huron is a very large Great Lake with many access points. On the Ontario side, drive via Highway 6 to Tobermory for access to the northern Georgian Bay coast and the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry to Manitoulin Island; the Trans‑Canada Highway (Highway 17) serves northern/eastern shores near Sault Ste. Marie. Major regional centres (Toronto, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie) provide road access to different parts of the lake; local ferries and port towns are used to reach islands and shoreline parks.
Tips for Visiting Lake Huron #
- If you want island scenery and sheltered waters, head to Georgian Bay and Manitoulin Island; the MS Chi-Cheemaun ferry (Tobermory-South Baymouth) is the main vehicle/passenger link and should be booked ahead in summer.
- Plan visits for late spring or early fall when weather is usually calmer and popular shoreline spots-Tobermory, Killarney and Manitoulin-are far less crowded than in peak summer.
