Lake Güija is a freshwater lake located on the border between Guatemala and El Salvador. It is a transboundary lake important to communities on both sides of the frontier.
The shoreline supports local fishing communities and small-scale tourism focused on birdwatching and lakeside villages. Boats and simple launches are used locally for transport and fishing.
The lake and its immediate basin have been used historically by nearby indigenous and rural communities for fishing and irrigation. Governance and resource use are shared issues because the lake lies on the international border.
The lake sits on the Guatemala-El Salvador border in the southwestern part of Guatemala and the northeastern part of El Salvador, within a landscape of low hills and agricultural land.
