Lake Erie
Lake Shallow Great Lake bordering US and Canada
Lake Erie, one of the Great Lakes, supports recreational boating, sport fishing (notably walleye), shoreline beaches and islands like Pelee Island and Long Point for birdwatching.
Lake Erie is one of the five Great Lakes of North America, bordering the Canadian province of Ontario and the U.S. states of Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York and Michigan. It is the shallowest of the Great Lakes and is noted for warm summer waters, productive fisheries and extensive shoreline recreation areas.
The lake has a surface area of roughly 25,700 square kilometres, a mean depth near 19 metres and a maximum depth approaching 64 metres. Key coastal features on the Canadian side include islands such as Pelee Island and important wetlands like Long Point, both significant for bird migration and biodiversity.
Lake Erie has long been an important corridor for commercial shipping, regional fisheries and recreational boating. Water quality and algal bloom issues have been management priorities for binational environmental cooperation in recent decades.
The Canadian shoreline stretches along southern Ontario, with major ports, conservation areas and ferry connections to several islands within the lake.
- Depth and ecology: Lake Erie is the shallowest of the North American Great Lakes, with an average depth around 19 metres and a maximum depth near 64 metres, which contributes to its warmer summer temperatures and strong seasonal productivity.
- International borders and uses: Shared by the Canadian province of Ontario and four U.S. states, the lake supports commercial and recreational fisheries, shipping lanes and numerous shoreline parks and beaches.
What to See #
- Pelee Island and Canadian islands: Pelee Island and other Canadian islands in the lake form important wildlife habitats and seasonal ferry connections to the Ontario mainland.
- Long Point: Long Point on the Ontario shore, a long sand-spit that extends into the lake and is recognised for bird migration and wetlands conservation.
How to Get to Lake Erie #
Lake Erie is accessible by road from multiple points on both the Canadian and U.S. shores. In Ontario the Queen Elizabeth Way (QEW) and Highway 3 run along parts of the lakeshore and link lake towns (for example around the Niagara/Port Colborne/Fort Erie area); from Toronto much parts of the Erie shore are reached by a roughly 1.5-2‑hour drive depending on destination and traffic.
On the U.S. side major interstate routes such as I‑90/I‑80/I‑75 provide access to numerous towns on the lake; local roads and waterfront parks give pedestrian access to beaches and shorelines.
Tips for Visiting Lake Erie #
- Visit Lake Erie's Canadian shore in late spring to early fall for warmer water and peak birding/boating activity; spring and fall migrations are particularly good at Long Point and Rondeau provincial parks.
- If you want calmer water and quieter spots, head to sheltered bays and designated provincial parks rather than the busiest beach strips, and choose weekdays or early mornings to avoid summer weekend crowds.
Best Time to Visit Lake Erie #
For warm weather and lakeside activities on Lake Erie (Canadian side), visit in summer (June-August).
