Lake Engure
Lake Coastal lagoon and protected bird habitat
A coastal lagoon within Engure Nature Park, Lake Engure supports reed beds and migratory birds; birdwatching, cycling routes and nearby Baltic beaches attract nature-minded visitors.
Lake Engure is a shallow coastal lake in Talsi Municipality on Latvia’s western coast, separated from the Gulf of Riga by a narrow sand barrier. The lake and surrounding wetlands are protected within Engure Nature Park and are internationally important for waterbirds.
The littoral zones and reedbeds support a diversity of breeding and migratory birds, and the area is used for birdwatching, guided walks and educational visits. The lake’s coastal setting creates brackish influences and sand-dune habitats along parts of the shore.
Historically the lake has been influenced by changing sea levels and sedimentation that produced the present sand barrier; protection under the nature park focuses on habitat conservation and low-intensity tourism.
Lake Engure sits on Latvia’s Kurzeme coast within Talsi Municipality, set behind coastal dunes and connected via wetlands to the broader Gulf of Riga shoreline.
- Protected area status: Part of Engure Nature Park and designated for bird conservation, making it a key site for migratory and breeding waterbirds on Latvia's coast.
