Lake Elmenteita is a shallow alkaline lake in Nakuru County on Kenya’s Rift Valley floor, forming part of an important East African soda-lake system. It is recognised for its ecological role supporting large birds and wetland wildlife.
The lake and its immediate surroundings have long been used by pastoral communities and later incorporated into private and community conservancies and protected areas to manage wildlife and grazing. Conservation efforts focus on habitat protection for the bird populations and wetlands.
Lake Elmenteita sits in the central Kenyan Rift Valley between Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha, within Nakuru County. The nearest larger town is Gilgil and the area is reachable by road from Nakuru and Nairobi.

How to Get to Lake Elmenteita #
Lake Elmenteita is in Nakuru County on the floor of the Rift Valley, between Nakuru and Nairobi. By road it is reached from Nairobi by driving northwest on the Nairobi-Nakuru highway (A104) and then leaving for the Gilgil/Elmenteita area onto local district roads; the drive from Nairobi is roughly 130-150 km depending on route. From Nakuru town the lake is to the southeast and is typically reached by a shorter drive on local roads; expect to park at roadside access points and walk a short distance to the shore or reserve entrances.
Tips for Visiting Lake Elmenteita #
- Plan visits for early morning or late afternoon when wading birds (especially flamingos) are most active and light is best for photography.
- Enter and view the lake from managed conservancy access (Soysambu Conservancy/private ranches) or organized lodges-guided drives inside the conservancy give the best, closest viewing while supporting local conservation.
- Don't limit yourself to the shoreline: the alkaline flats and nearby rocky outcrops offer different habitats for birdwatching, and guided visits often point out lesser-known viewing spots.
