Lake Chilwa
Lake Shallow, seasonal lake important for local fisheries
Lake Chilwa, a shallow inland lake, supports fishing communities and vast bird populations; visitors come for birdwatching, seasonal waterfowl concentrations, and local market life in lakeshore villages.
Lake Chilwa is a shallow, seasonal lake in southern Malawi that occupies an endorheic basin and experiences substantial year-to-year fluctuations in area and depth. The lake supports extensive reedbeds and floodplain habitat that are important for local fisheries and a wide range of waterbirds.
Because it is relatively shallow and influenced by local rainfall, the lake can expand and contract dramatically, exposing mudflats and creating feeding habitat for waders and other species. The surrounding human communities rely on the lake for fishing and wetland resources.
Geographically the lake lies in Malawi’s Southern Region, east of Blantyre and surrounded by low-lying agricultural and wetland areas.
- Seasonal variability: Water levels fluctuate seasonally and between years, creating extensive exposed flats at times and supporting large concentrations of waterbirds and local fisheries.
- Birdlife importance: The lake and surrounding wetlands are important for migratory and resident birdlife and are recognised for their ecological role in Malawi's southern lowlands.
Tips for Visiting Lake Chilwa #
- If you want to visit Chisi Island and the lake's remote communities, organize local boat transport from nearby lakeshore villages in advance - small boats are the common way to reach the island.
- Lake Chilwa is a shallow, seasonal wetland (Ramsar‑listed) so check local water levels and transport availability before travelling; access and fishing activity can change significantly with the season.
- Bring a local bird guide or join a local guide for birdwatching - the lake supports abundant waterbirds and a guide will help you find the best viewing spots and seasonal concentrations.
