Lake Cerknica

Lake Seasonal intermittent lake and important karst wetland

A seasonal karst lake in Slovenia that fills and drains with groundwater, creating changing wetlands. Visitors come for birdwatching, cycling routes and exploring nearby caves in the Dinaric karst.

Main image

Lake Cerknica is a large intermittent karst lake in the Notranjska region of Slovenia, near the town of Cerknica. Its surface area varies dramatically with precipitation and groundwater conditions, making the lake notable for sudden seasonal changes.

When full the lake covers extensive open water that attracts large numbers of waterbirds; during dry periods much of the basin becomes marsh and grassland, exposing channels and islets. The dynamic water regime creates a range of wetland habitats important for biodiversity.

The lake basin has been managed and modified over centuries with drainage and land-use changes, but its characteristic intermittent behaviour is a result of underlying karst geology and natural groundwater flows.

Lake Cerknica sits within a limestone karst plain in southwestern Slovenia, a short distance from the town of Cerknica and within driving distance of larger centres such as Postojna.

  • Seasonal flooding: The lake periodically fills and drains through karst sinkholes and underground channels; the fullest extent usually follows autumn and winter rains.

How to Get to Lake Cerknica #

By public transport from Ljubljana: regional trains (Slovenske železnice) and intercity buses run to the town of Cerknica. From Cerknica station or the bus stop you can reach the lake shore by a short taxi ride or on foot (around 1-2 km to common access points). By car: follow the A1/E61 motorway from Ljubljana toward Postojna and leave for the regional roads to Cerknica; driving time is typically about 1-1.5 hours depending on traffic.

Tips for Visiting Lake Cerknica #

  • Visit in spring (after heavy rains) or early morning to see Lake Cerknica at its fullest and to catch the best bird activity; water levels vary seasonally so timing determines what you'll actually see.
  • Park in the town of Cerknica and follow the marked trails to the official observation points and towers - these viewpoints give the clearest panoramic views without needing long walks across fragile terrain.
  • Check the local tourist/info centre for current water-level information before planning a hike: many visitors miss how dramatically the landscape changes between the flooded and dry phases and plan the wrong activities for the season.

Best Time to Visit Lake Cerknica #

Visit Lake Cerknica in autumn to early spring to see the intermittent lake at its fullest; in summer it is frequently largely dry.

Autumn-Winter (best for a full lake)
Oct-Feb · 0-12 °C

Spring (good for water and wildlife)
Mar-May · 5-18 °C
Spring often still has substantial water from winter rains and milder weather for walking and birdwatching around the shores.
Summer (often dry)
Jun-Aug · 18-28 °C
In many years the lake basin partly or fully dries in summer, exposing meadows and wetlands rather than open water.
