Lake Burera
Lake Rwandan freshwater lake near the Virunga volcanic region
North of Musanze, Lake Burera sits close to Lake Ruhondo beneath Virunga foothills; visitors mix village homestays, boat trips across the twin lakes, and hikes on rural tracks that peer toward nearby volcanic slopes.
Lake Burera is a volcanic crater lake in northern Rwanda’s highland region. It is one of a close pair of crater lakes in the Virunga volcanic area, the other being Lake Ruhondo.
The lake offers scenic shoreline views and is used by nearby communities for small-scale fishing and agriculture along its shores. There are informal viewpoints on roads and ridges above the lake that are frequented for photography and short visits.
Lake Burera formed in volcanic terrain and has persisted as a freshwater crater basin; local settlement and land use have developed around its shores over time. The two adjacent lakes have influenced local transport and settlement patterns.
The lake sits in Rwanda’s Northern Province near the Virunga Massif, close to the district of Burera and not far from the Rwanda-Uganda border, within a hilly, agricultural landscape.

How to Get to Lake Burera #
From Kigali, travel north by car toward Musanze (Ruhengeri) and follow local roads toward Burera and Ruhondo; the drive is roughly 2.5-3 hours depending on road and weather.

- Hire a local guide in Gisenyi or Ruhengeri to arrange boat rides-local fishermen make the best guides for bird and hippo spotting
- Visit Musanze (Ruhengeri) for secondary activities like hiking in Volcanoes National Park
- Be mindful of changing water levels and seasonal rain when planning shore hikes
