The lake’s islands and calm waters provide sheltered canoe routes and short boat excursions; visitors commonly explore several islands and use local guides for boat transfers. Birdwatching and walks on the surrounding terraced hillsides are also common activities.
Lake Bunyonyi has long been part of local Batwa and Bakiga livelihoods and has become an important regional tourism destination over recent decades. The lake’s islands carry a mix of cultural stories and historic uses that are interpreted for visitors.
Geographically the lake lies near the town of Kabale in southwestern Uganda, close to the Rwandan border, and sits at high elevation compared with many other East African lakes.

How to Get to Lake Bunyonyi #
Bunyonyi is about 10-15 km southwest of Kabale town. From Kabale, take a local taxi (matatu) or arrange a private transfer; the drive takes approximately 45 minutes to an hour on hilly roads. Public buses connect Kampala to Kabale; from there reach the lake by road.
