Lake Biel (Bielersee) is a freshwater lake in western Switzerland, lying at the foot of the Jura mountains and forming part of the Three-Lakes region. It is situated in a bilingual area where German and French coexist.

The lake offers boating, sailing and waterside recreation and is bordered by vineyards and small towns that are popular for day trips. Cycling and walking routes along the shore provide scenic access to towns and viewpoints.

Historically the lake has supported local fishing, transport and viticulture on its shores; the surrounding plain is an agricultural and wine-producing area. Over time infrastructure for navigation and flood control has shaped modern shorelines and harbours.

The lake sits between the Jura range and the Swiss plateau, with the city of Biel/Bienne on the northeastern shore and other small towns along the southern and western edges. It is accessible from Bern and other regional centres by road and rail.

What to See#

• Biel/Bienne: The bilingual city of Biel/Bienne sits on the lakes northeastern shore and serves as the regions main transport and cultural centre, offering harbours, promenades and lakeside access.
• Shore towns: La Neuveville and other small towns on the southern and western shores adjoin local vineyards and provide access points for walking and wine tourism.

Take the Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) to Biel/Bienne station; the lakefront and promenades are about a 5-10 minute walk from the station. By road the A5 motorway runs along parts of the lake; Biel/Bienne is roughly 30 km northwest of Bern by road (about a 30-40 minute drive depending on traffic). Local buses and cycling routes connect towns around the lake.

• Use the regular passenger boats that operate on Lake Biel to hop between lakeside towns - the short crossings let you sample different waterfront villages without driving and are less crowded on weekdays.
• Explore the vineyard terraces on the lake's northern shore (Bielersee wine region) in the late afternoon when light and views are best - small, family-run wineries here are often overlooked by day-trippers.
• Start from Biel/Bienne station to follow the well-marked lakeside promenades and ferry connections; signage and services are bilingual (German/French) so expect information in both languages.
