How to Get to Thun#
Bozeman is most conveniently reached via Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN), with regular seasonal flights and frequent shuttle/taxi options into town. There is no Amtrak service-most longer-distance public connections use intercity buses or flights.
Bozeman Yellowstone International Airport (BZN): BZN is the primary airport for Bozeman and southwest Montana. The airport is about a 15-25 minute drive to downtown Bozeman; taxi fares typically run US$25-40, and Groome Transportation operates scheduled shuttles to Bozeman and Big Sky (typical one-way shuttle fares roughly US$25-$40 depending on destination and luggage). Rental cars are available on-site.
Billings Logan International Airport (BIL) - regional alternative: Billings is a larger regional airport used by some visitors; driving from BIL to Bozeman takes roughly 1.5-2 hours by car. Long-distance bus or private transfer is possible but less convenient than flying into BZN.
Train: There is no direct national passenger rail service to Bozeman-Amtrak does not serve the city.
Bus / Shuttle: Intercity bus operators such as Jefferson Lines and private shuttles serve the region. Groome Transportation runs the main scheduled airport shuttle between BZN, Bozeman and popular resorts; local Mountain Line transit and private taxi services cover town trips.
How to Get Around Thun#
Flying into BZN and using a shuttle, taxi or rental car is the simplest way to reach Bozeman; the town itself is compact and well-served by local buses, bikes and on-foot exploration.
- Airport shuttle (Groome Transportation and others) (US$25-40) - Scheduled shuttles connect BZN with downtown Bozeman and nearby resorts including Big Sky. Shuttles must be booked in advance for guaranteed space and are usually cheaper than a taxi for single travellers with luggage.
- Taxi / Rideshare (US$25-40) - Taxis and rideshare services operate from BZN to the city centre; expect roughly US$25-40 for a one-way trip depending on traffic and exact drop-off. Rideshare availability can vary by season-have a backup taxi number during peak winter or summer periods.
- Car rental (US$40-120/day) - Renting a car is common and recommended if you plan to explore the region (Gallatin Valley, Hyalite Canyon, Big Sky). Winter conditions can require snow tires or chains; fuel and parking are widely available in Bozeman.
- Local bus / Mountain Line (US$1-2 per ride) - Local Mountain Line buses serve Bozeman with low fares, covering the city and some university areas. Useful for budget travel within town; schedules are reduced evenings and weekends so check current timetables.
- Walking - Bozeman’s downtown and Montana State University area are compact and pleasant to explore on foot. Walking is often faster than driving for short downtown trips and a great way to see local shops and restaurants.
