Lake Bangweulu

Lake Bangweulu is a large shallow lake and associated wetland complex in northern Zambia, forming an extensive system of seasonally flooded plains, reedbeds and channels. It supports permanent and seasonal fishing communities and a rich assemblage of wetland species.

The area is important for waterbirds and wetland species including species sought by birdwatchers; visitors explore the lake and wetlands by canoe, small boat and on foot through reed fringes. Fishing, village visits and birding are the main visitor activities, with local communities living on islands and lake shores and relying on the seasonal fisheries.

The lake and wetlands have long been used by local fishing communities and have been recognised for their ecological importance as a major inland-water system in Zambia. Management and use combine local livelihoods with conservation of wetland habitats.

Lake Bangweulu sits within the Bangweulu basin in northern Zambia and is surrounded by seasonal floodplain and woodland. Several small towns and fishing villages lie on the lake’s shores and provide the usual access points for visitors.
