Lake Bafa

Lake Bafa is a coastal lake in Aydın Province in southwestern Turkey that occupies a former gulf of the Aegean Sea now separated by alluvial deposits. The lake and surrounding wetlands are protected within Bafa Gölü National Park and are rich in birdlife and archaeological remains.

The shoreline is dominated by reedbeds, shallow flats and rocky slopes of the Latmus range, and visitors commonly explore birdwatching sites and the slopes where ruins are visible. The area attracts birders, photographers and visitors interested in the ancient ruins and coastal wetlands.

Historically the basin was connected to the Aegean until sedimentation and changes in sea level transformed the inlet into an inland lake; the nearby ancient city of Heraclea ad Latmos prospered in classical and Byzantine periods. The modern national-park designation protects both natural and cultural values.

Lake Bafa lies between the Aegean coast and the Beşparmak (Latmus) mountains, near towns such as Milas and Didim, in the western reaches of Aydın Province.

• Coastal origin: Originally part of the Aegean Sea, the lake became cut off by sedimentation and is now a large coastal lagoon with brackish pockets and extensive reedbeds.
• Highlights and photography: Known for birdwatching and archaeological sites, best light for photography is in the late afternoon when the slopes of Mount Latmus are illuminated.

What to See #

• Heraclea ad Latmos ruins: Archaeological remains of the ancient city Heraclea ad Latmos lie on the lake's northern and eastern shores and include Roman and Byzantine-period ruins adjacent to rocky slopes.
• Bafa Gölü National Park: The lake is contained within Bafa Gölü (Lake Bafa) National Park, which includes reed beds, wetlands and the foothills of Mount Latmus (Beşparmak range).
