Lake Scenic volcanic lake surrounded by Maya villages

Lake Atitlán is a large volcanic lake in the Guatemalan Highlands bordered by volcanic cones and dozens of lakeside villages. The lake fills a volcanic caldera and is ringed by the volcanoes San Pedro, Tolimán and Atitlán.
Towns and villages around the lake serve as the main attractions, with boat taxis providing frequent crossings between settlements such as Panajachel, San Pedro La Laguna and Santiago Atitlán. Outdoor activities include hiking to viewpoints like the Indian Nose, kayaking, and exploring indigenous markets and cultural sites in the lakeside communities.
The lake basin formed after the collapse of a large volcanic structure; human settlement around the lake includes long-standing Maya communities, and many towns retain indigenous languages, crafts and traditions. The modern tourist economy developed during the 20th century alongside continued local cultural life.
