Lake Assal NASA.jpg

Lake Assal is a saline lake in central Djibouti situated within the Afar Depression and is the lowest point on the African continent at about 155 metres below sea level. The lake is notable for its highly saline waters and broad white salt flats.

The landscape comprises a shallow saline lake ringed by thick salt crust and industrial salt-extraction works; the surface and shoreline produce stark crystalline patterns that are visually distinctive. The site is used for commercial salt harvesting and draws visitors for its unusual low-elevation landscape and geological setting.

The lake basin lies in a tectonically active region of the Afar Triangle and has been shaped by rifting and volcanic activity; its connection to the nearby Gulf of Tadjoura is driven by subterranean channels and evaporation dynamics. Salt extraction has taken place at the lake for many years and continues under national and private operations.

Lake Assal sits in Djibouti’s Tadjourah/Tadjoura-region interior, roughly inland from the Gulf of Tadjoura; it is accessed by road from coastal towns and from Djibouti City.

  • Lowest point in Africa: The lake sits at about 155 metres below sea level, making it the lowest point on the African continent.
  • Visiting advice: Strong solar reflection and high ground temperatures mean midday visits are hot and bright-early morning or late afternoon give better light for photography and cooler conditions.

What to See #

  • Salt flats and mining areas: Extensive salt flats and crystalline salt crust surrounding the lake basin, with active commercial salt extraction visible at shore facilities.
  • Saline shoreline: A shoreline of bright, reflective saline water and crust that creates stark, geometric patterns on the lake surface and adjacent pans.
