Lake Volcanic lake in Hakone with Mount Fuji views
A caldera lake in Hakone favoured for sightseeing boat cruises, the torii of Hakone Shrine and frequent views of Mount Fuji on clear days. Nearby onsens and museums complete typical lake excursions.
Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) is a volcanic caldera lake in the Hakone area of Kanagawa Prefecture, formed within the caldera of Mount Hakone. It sits within a popular mountain resort region and is known for scenic boat services and lakeside shrines.
The lake’s shoreline has several visitor facilities including viewing points, boat piers and the lakeside branch of Hakone Shrine. Sightlines from the lake and from surrounding hills often frame Mount Fuji when weather conditions are clear, making the lake a focal point for photography and short cruises.
The lake formed in the wake of eruptions of Mount Hakone and occupies a mountain basin that has been a recreational destination since the 19th century, with modern tourist infrastructure added in the 20th century.
Lake Ashi lies in the volcanic highlands of Hakone, southwest of central Tokyo and within Hakone National Park. The lake sits at a mountain elevation and is reached by road, ropeway and local rail connections from Odawara and other nearby towns.
- Fuji views: Many viewpoints around the lake frame Mount Fuji on clear days; visibility is best in the cooler months and on calm mornings.
How to Get to Lake Ashi #
Lake Ashi (Ashinoko) in Hakone is accessible from Odawara or Hakone-Yumoto. From Odawara Station take the Hakone Tozan Railway to Hakone-Yumoto and then board Hakone Tozan buses or local buses to Moto‑Hakone or Hakone-machi on the lake; sightseeing “pirate” boats operate from Moto‑Hakone and Hakone-machi across the lake. From central Tokyo you can reach Hakone-Yumoto by Odakyu Romancecar or JR to Odawara and then transfer - travel times typically range from about 1.5 to 2 hours depending on route.
Tips for Visiting Lake Ashi #
- For the clearest views of Mount Fuji across Lake Ashi, aim for early morning on clear days; visibility often deteriorates later in the day as clouds build.
- Board the sightseeing boats from Moto-Hakone or Hakone-machi to combine a lakeside cruise with a short walk to the Hakone Shrine's torii gate; many visitors stick to one port and miss the shrine and lakeside walks.
- Use the Hakone Free Pass (sold by Odakyu) or local transport day passes to coordinate boat cruises, the ropeway and buses-this saves time and makes it easy to hop between the lake, the ropeway and nearby attractions.
- If you want views plus fewer crowds, take the ropeway to Owakudani or disembark at Togendai and walk the quieter lakeside paths toward Moto-Hakone late in the afternoon.
