Laguna de Bay
Lake Philippines' largest lake, important for fisheries and irrigation
Laguna de Bay, the Philippines’ largest lake east of Metro Manila, supports fishing communities, boat traffic and lakeside towns; visitors explore local markets, birdlife and shoreline promenades.
Laguna de Bay is the largest lake in the Philippines, occupying a broad basin southeast of Metro Manila and bordering the provinces of Laguna and Rizal. It is a major inland waterbody used for fisheries, aquaculture and local transport.
The lake receives inflow from many rivers and drains westward to Manila Bay through the Pasig River. Its extensive shoreline includes towns, agricultural land and urbanised areas that rely on the lake for livelihood and water use.
Human use has shaped the lake for centuries, with traditional fishing and traffic giving way to intensive modern uses that have increased nutrient loads and pollution in parts of the basin. Management and remediation have been ongoing priorities for regional authorities.
Laguna de Bay lies immediately southeast of the Philippines’ capital region, with many towns and cities along its shores and easy road access from Metro Manila.
- Size and role: It is the largest lake in the Philippines by surface area, covering roughly 900 square kilometres and serving as a major freshwater resource for surrounding provinces.
- Hydrology and issues: The lake drains to Manila Bay via the Pasig River and is ecologically and economically important for fisheries and aquaculture but faces significant pollution and water-quality pressures.
How to Get to Laguna de Bay #
-
By road from Metro Manila: Laguna de Bay borders Rizal and Laguna provinces immediately east and southeast of Metro Manila. You can reach lakeside towns by taking the South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) or the C-5/Ortigas corridors and then local provincial roads (for example the Manila East Road toward Binangonan or the SLEX exits toward Calamba/Los Baños). Travel time from central Metro Manila varies by destination and traffic (typically 30-90 minutes).
-
By public transport: regular buses and jeepneys run from major Manila terminals (Cubao, Buendia/EDSA, Alabang) to lakeside towns such as Binangonan and Los Baños; from those town centers it is usually a short walk (minutes) or a short tricycle/jeepney ride to the lakeshore.
Tips for Visiting Laguna de Bay #
- Visit Laguna de Bay at dawn or dusk along the eastern Rizal shoreline (towns such as Binangonan, Cardona and Morong) to see local fishing activity and better birdlife visibility away from the busiest Metro Manila shorefront.
- If you want a lakeside meal or market experience, head to smaller lakeside barangays on the Rizal side rather than the industrialized Metro Manila edges-local eateries and fish vendors cluster there and offer fresher catches.
