La Venta

La Venta is an Olmec archaeological site in Tabasco, Mexico, notable as a major Formative-period ceremonial and political center active in the first millennium BCE. The site is now preserved as an archaeological park and museum within the modern city of Villahermosa.

The park contains the site’s principal monumental sculptures and the remains of a central plaza and earthen mounds. Visitors see relocated and in situ stone monuments, museum exhibits of small artifacts, and reconstructed display areas that interpret Olmec ritual and civic architecture.

La Venta was created and used by the Olmec culture during the Middle to Late Formative period, roughly between about 900 and 400 BCE. Over time the center declined and its monumental sculptures were later excavated and conserved in the 20th century, after which a park-museum was established to protect and exhibit the finds.

The site sits within Villahermosa, Tabasco, on the Gulf coastal plain of southeastern Mexico. It is located in the state capital’s metropolitan area and is accessible from the city center.
