La Sebastiana is one of the houses of the Chilean poet Pablo Neruda, preserved and operated as a museum in the city of Valparaíso. The building is noted for its idiosyncratic interior, panoramic views over the bay and display of the poet’s personal collections.

Rooms are arranged across multiple levels to exploit the steep hillside site, with terraces and windows offering views across the harbour. The house contains furniture, manuscripts and objects that illustrate Neruda’s life and work and is set up for public visits and guided tours.

Neruda occupied several homes in Chile over his lifetime; La Sebastiana reflects his interest in collecting and in siting residences with commanding coastal views.

La Sebastiana (Pablo Neruda’s house) is in the hills of Valparaíso’s old town (Cerro Concepción/Cerro Bellavista area). From Valparaíso’s main terminal or Plaza Sotomayor it’s a short taxi ride or a 10-20 minute uphill walk to the museum; several of the city’s historic ascensores (funiculars) and local buses serve the hill neighborhoods nearby.

• Arrive mid-morning on a weekday to avoid cruise-ship groups that concentrate around noon and to have a calmer experience of the house and terraces.
• Use one of Valparaíso's funiculars to reach the hill rather than climbing steep streets-the ascensores put you close to the museum and save time/effort.
• Don't skip the terrace levels: Neruda's house is arranged for views, and the rooftop terraces offer wide panoramas of the bay that many visitors miss by staying only on the ground floor.
