La Campana National Park protects a Mediterranean-climate mountain landscape in Chile’s Valparaíso Region and is centred on Cerro La Campana, a prominent peak within the park. The area conserves native forest and distinctive plant species.

Key reasons to visit are the park’s hiking trails and viewpoints that lead to the summit of Cerro La Campana and reveal wide views toward the coastal plain and ocean. The park is also important for the conservation of endemic trees such as the Chilean wine palm.

The mountain and park were visited by naturalists in the 19th century and have been managed for conservation and recreation since they entered formal protected status in the 20th century. Trails and visitor facilities have been established to support hiking and nature observation.

La Campana National Park lies inland in the Valparaíso administrative region, northwest of Santiago and close to towns such as Olmué. The park sits between coastal valleys and the foothills, providing an upland natural area within reach of regional urban centres.

What to See#

• Cerro La Campana summit: The core attraction is Cerro La Campana, a mountain summit reached by marked trails that offer panoramic views of the coastal plain and, on clear days, the Pacific Ocean.
• Native forest and palm groves: Areas of native Mediterranean forest within the park protect remnant groves of the Chilean wine palm and other endemic species.

From Valparaíso or Viña del Mar: take intercity buses to Olmué (approx. 1-1.5 hours), then local taxi or shuttle to the park entrance (15-30 minutes). From Santiago, buses to Olmué depart from Terminal Alameda (Estación Central) or Pajaritos bus terminals; private car along Route G-171 and Ruta 66 is also possible.

• Start early to attempt the trail to Cerro La Campana; the summit route becomes exposed and hot after 10:30am.
• Bring binoculars for the endemic Chilean trees (like the endangered Jubaea chilensis) and the mountain-conserved fauna.
• If aiming for Darwin's route, ask a CONAF ranger about the classic path starting near Olmué - guidance changes with season and wildfire risk.
• Expect basic facilities; carry cash for park entry and permit fees.
