Kızkalesi (castle)
Archaeological Site Medieval castle built on a small offshore islet
A medieval fortress on a small islet off Mersin Province’s coast, reachable by short boat trip; Kızkalesi combines castle visits with swimming, coastal restaurants and boat tours.
Kızkalesi, often called the Maiden’s Castle, is a medieval island fortress located just off the coast of the town of Kızkalesi in Mersin Province, Turkey. The site is a well-known coastal castle complex that has guarded the local shoreline since the medieval period.
The fortifications date to the medieval era and were part of coastal defenses used by successive regional powers, including Byzantine and later Cilician Armenian and Ottoman authorities, with repairs and modifications made across centuries. The twin castles were built to protect the harbour and nearby settlement and to control maritime traffic along this stretch of the Mediterranean.
The island sits directly off the shoreline of the town of Kızkalesi in the Erdemli district of Mersin Province on Turkey’s southern Mediterranean coast. The town and its castles are reached by road from the Mersin coastal corridor and are a short distance from other Cilician coastal sites.
- Access by boat: Boat trips from the beach put visitors on the island within a few minutes during calm weather; access can be restricted in rough seas.
- Best time to visit: Best visited in spring and summer when sea conditions are calmer and daytime access to the island is easier.
What to See #
- Island castle: A small island fortress featuring curtain walls and towers, accessible from the nearby beach by short boat trips during the tourist season.
- Mainland castle and ruins: A mainland fortification and shoreline ruins that form a paired defensive system with the island castle and can be visited on foot from the town.
