Kızkalesi

Kızkalesi refers to a medieval fortress built on a small islet off the Mediterranean coast of southern Turkey, alongside coastal ruins on the adjacent shore. The name means “Maiden’s Castle” and the islet castle is the site’s defining feature.

The islet castle comprises curtain walls and towers arranged around a compact keep; the nearby mainland contains the remains of a harbour settlement and additional fortifications. Visitors typically view the island castle from the beach or reach it by small boat for closer inspection.

The site originated in antiquity and was reused and rebuilt through the medieval period as part of the region’s coastal defenses and harbour system. Over centuries the islet and mainland structures were repaired and altered by various local powers, leaving a layered archaeological footprint.

Kızkalesi sits on the Mediterranean coast in Mersin Province, immediately offshore from the village and beach that share the name. The islet lies directly off the shoreline and forms a distinctive coastal landmark visible from the town beach.
