Heho / Lashio regional fields: Smaller domestic airfields exist in Shan State but do not provide reliable, frequent connections to Kyaukme; most travellers use Mandalay or Lashio as overland hubs.
Train: Myanmar Railways operates lines across northern Shan State with limited frequencies; there is rail service between Mandalay and some Shan towns but schedules and conditions vary-road remains the more predictable option.

- Long-distance bus / shared car (MMK variable (check local operators)) - Buses and shared cars run between Mandalay, Lashio and Kyaukme; these are the standard public transport option. Services can be long and slow because of road conditions-book with a known operator and allow plenty of time for border/road delays.
- Private hire / car with driver (Varies widely by hire arrangement) - Hiring a private car or arranging a driver from Mandalay or Lashio gives flexibility on timing and stops and is often used by travellers visiting remote parts of Shan State. Costs are higher but offer safer, faster transfers on rough roads.
- Train (limited services) (MMK low (economy fares)) - Myanmar Railways runs some services in northern Shan State but frequencies and comfort vary; trains may be slower and less reliable than road transfers for Kyaukme. Use rail only where schedules match your itinerary and allow extra time.
- Local taxis / motorbike taxi (MMK small local fares) - Within Kyaukme, local taxis and motorbike taxis provide short-distance transport and transfers to nearby villages; negotiate fares in advance and be cautious with luggage on motorbikes. These are practical for reaching market areas and short excursions.
