The Kwahu Plateau is an upland area in eastern Ghana noted for its escarpments, towns and recreational use. It is a prominent local highland region within Ghana’s Eastern area and is known regionally for outdoor recreation and cultural events.
The area has long been settled by Akan-speaking communities and developed historically as a series of market towns and agricultural settlements. Over the 20th century the plateau grew in importance as transport and tourism links improved, making the seasonal festivals and viewpoints more accessible.
The Kwahu Plateau sits in Ghana’s eastern highlands, above the surrounding lowland regions; towns and lookout points are distributed along the escarpment. It lies inland from the southern coastal plain and is reached via regional roads from larger urban centres to the south.
- Kwahu Easter festival: A major cultural event each Easter draws large numbers of visitors for paragliding, street festivities and markets.
