About KV60

KV60 is a small New Kingdom tomb in the Valley of the Kings on the west bank of the Nile at Luxor, notable for containing female remains and for its association in scholarship with Hatshepsut. The tomb is one of the smaller shafts among the numbered Valley tombs.

The interior consists of a shaft and one or more small chambers that held two female mummies; one of these was later proposed by some Egyptologists as possibly being Queen Hatshepsut, a hypothesis that has been debated. The tombs of this size are significant for mortuary archaeology because of preserved burial assemblages rather than large architectural scale.

The tomb dates to the New Kingdom period and is part of the wider royal burial landscape used across dynasties for elite interments and later reuses. Like many Valley tombs it was entered in antiquity and has been the subject of modern archaeological study and conservation.

KV60 is located within the Valley of the Kings necropolis on Luxor’s west bank and is reached via the valley track that links the numbered tomb entrances; visitor access is managed as part of the wider Valley site.

  • Mummy identification: Contains two female burials and a mummy that has been proposed by researchers as possibly belonging to Hatshepsut, a controversial identification rather than a settled fact.
  • Visitor access: Small, enclosed tomb spaces with restricted public access and frequent rotation of visitor entry within the Valley of the Kings complex.

Tips for Visiting KV60

  • If open, allow a guide to explain the tomb's unusual finds rather than expecting grand wall scenes.
