KV36 is a small rock-cut tomb located in the Valley of the Kings at Thebes (modern Luxor), within the Theban necropolis used during Egypt’s New Kingdom (c. 1550-1070 BCE).
The interior consists of a vertical shaft and a limited series of chambers carved into the limestone; these tombs are comparatively modest in scale compared with the largest royal tombs. Many individual KV tombs are not continuously open to tourists and are subject to rotation and conservation measures.
Constructed during the New Kingdom period, KV36 was intended as a burial place cut directly into the valley rock for a royal courtier or member of the elite. Like other tombs in the valley, it has experienced looting and later archaeological investigation and conservation.
The tomb sits in the Valley of the Kings on Luxor’s west bank, within the Theban necropolis area that rises from the floodplain of the Nile into limestone ridges approximately 4-6 kilometers from modern Luxor.
How to Get to KV36 #
KV36 lies in the Valley of the Kings on Luxor’s West Bank. From central Luxor reach the West Bank by local ferry or taxi and drive approximately 5-8 km (roughly a 10-20 minute journey) to the Valley of the Kings; most visitors travel by taxi or prearranged tour rather than by a numbered city bus.
At the Valley’s visitor entrance and ticket area allow an on-foot walk of several minutes to around 15-20 minutes to reach specific tomb entrances; paths are unpaved in places.
Tips for Visiting KV36 #
- Go early in the day directly from the Valley of the Kings visitor centre to avoid afternoon crowds and heat; many tours concentrate later in the morning.
- Verify at the ticket office which tombs (by KV number) are accessible the day of your visit, since some are closed or on rotation for preservation.
- Keep visits brief inside each tomb to reduce congestion and follow guards' directions; small, less-decorated tombs can be rewarding if you take time to read the interpretive notes at the entrance.
