Kumurdo Cathedral

Kumurdo Cathedral is a medieval cathedral in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of southern Georgia, dating to the 10th century. It is an important regional example of medieval ecclesiastical architecture.

The cathedral is characterized by its cross-domed plan and rich stone-carved decoration, including carved capitals and relief work that attract study by scholars of medieval Caucasian architecture. The site functions primarily as an architectural and archaeological monument rather than a large active pilgrimage destination.

Construction of the church dates to the 10th century, with later medieval repairs and alterations evident in the fabric. It served as a monastic cathedral in the medieval period and has survived as a notable medieval structure in the highlands of southern Georgia.

Kumurdo stands in the highland landscape of Samtskhe-Javakheti, near settlements in the Akhalkalaki area of southern Georgia. The cathedral is set inland in a rural mountainous region of the country.
