Kulosaari Island

Kulosaari is an island neighbourhood in eastern Helsinki, Finland, that functions largely as a residential and recreational district. The area is known for its green spaces and coastal setting within the Helsinki metropolitan area.

The neighbourhood offers waterfront promenades, parks, and early 20th-century residential architecture, with marinas and small harbours along its shoreline. It is visited for walks, local cafés, and to see seaside housing and landscaped public spaces.

Developed as a planned residential suburb in the early 20th century, Kulosaari contains examples of period architecture and garden-suburb planning from that era. Its development reflected Helsinki’s expansion eastwards into the archipelago.

Kulosaari sits in the eastern part of the city of Helsinki and is connected to the mainland by bridges and road links; it forms part of the city’s island neighbourhoods in Uusimaa.

It lies only a few kilometres (around 4-6 km) from central Helsinki; you can reach it from the centre by local buses (journeys typically take around 10-15 minutes) or by car via the main eastern approaches into the city and the Kulosaari bridge. From the main bus stop in Kulosaari it is usually only a few minutes’ walk to the shoreline or local centre.

• Visit Kulosaari in late afternoon for best light on the seaside villas and quieter streets when central Helsinki day-trippers have returned to the city center.
• Cross the Kulosaari bridge or take a short bus/bike ride from central Helsinki to access the island; once there, follow the shoreline paths to find early 20th‑century modernist architecture that many visitors miss while sticking to the main roads.
