Kauppatori is Helsinki’s central market square at the South Harbour, an open-air market and waterfront space in the city’s core.

Stalls and kiosks sell fresh fish, local produce, flowers and tourist goods, and the square functions as a busy ferry terminal for short routes such as the ferry to the Suomenlinna sea fortress. The area is flanked by notable city buildings and promenades and is a focal point of central Helsinki’s waterfront activity.

The market is a seasonal hub with the greatest activity in the warmer months; it is located at the eastern end of the Esplanadi and directly on the Baltic shoreline in central Helsinki.

By metro/tram/bus: The central Helsinki tram network and buses stop within a few minutes’ walk of Kauppatori; the Market Square is adjacent to the Esplanadi and is easily reachable on foot from Helsinki Central Station.

• Arrive early (8:00-10:00am) for the best fish and produce and to watch daily trading rituals.
• The market is easily combined with a waterside walk to the Presidential Palace and Senate House nearby.
• Bargaining is expected for souvenirs; prices at the central arcades can be higher than at neighbourhood stalls.
