Kükenthaløya
Island Island in the Svalbard archipelago
How to Get to Kükenthaløya #
There is no scheduled public transport to Kükenthaløya. Visits are only possible as part of organized expedition cruises out of Longyearbyen (Svalbard’s main settlement) or other Arctic cruise embarkation points. Expeditions typically run from late June to early August and use zodiacs for shore landings; permits and landings are arranged by the ship’s operators.
Tips for Visiting Kükenthaløya #
- Travel with an experienced polar expedition operator - landings on remote Svalbard isles are tightly regulated and often limited to guided zodiac drops.
- Bring windproof layers and eye protection: even in summer the wind off pack ice stings and sunlight glinting on snow and water is brutal.
- Ask the ship's naturalist about the island's name - it opens conversation about the era of Arctic science and the German zoologist Willy Kükenthal, after whom the island is named.
Best Time to Visit Kükenthaløya #
Best visited on a guided Arctic expedition out of Longyearbyen between late June and early August, when sea ice, daylight and wildlife make landings possible.
