How to Get to Kuah
Kuah is Langkawi's main town and the island's ferry and commercial hub; Langkawi International Airport (LGK) and Kuah Jetty are the primary arrival points. Air travel to LGK is quickest, while ferries link the island to Peninsular Malaysia from several mainland terminals.
Langkawi International Airport (LGK): Langkawi’s airport is the main gateway and sits close to Kuah (about 10-20 minutes by road). Taxis from LGK to Kuah cost around MYR 15-30 and take roughly 10-20 minutes; some hotels offer shuttle services.
Penang International Airport (PEN) / Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL): Visitors sometimes fly into Penang or Kuala Lumpur and take a ferry to Langkawi - ferries from Penang (Swettenham Pier / Penang Port) to Kuah take about 2.5-3 hours with fares commonly MYR 60-120; ferries from Kuala Kedah or Kuala Perlis (on the mainland) to Kuah take about 1-1.5 hours with fares often MYR 18-40.
Train: There is no direct train to Langkawi; the nearest rail access on the Malaysian mainland is Butterworth (via ETS to Butterworth) followed by a shuttle to ferry terminals.
Bus / Ferry: From Butterworth or Alor Setar you can take a bus or taxi to the ferry terminals at Kuala Perlis or Kuala Kedah, then a ferry to Kuah Jetty. Bus + ferry combinations are common for overland connections from Peninsular Malaysia.
How to Get Around Kuah #
Kuah (the main town on Langkawi) is compact and easy to walk in the waterfront area around the jetty. Taxis, rented cars and motorbikes are common for getting around the island; fares are higher than on the mainland but reasonable for short trips. There are also local vans and limited bus services linking Kuah with popular beach areas like Pantai Cenang. If you plan island excursions, consider renting a car or booking transfers in advance during peak season.
