Krka National Park
National Park Park known for waterfalls and river canyon landscapes
Krka National Park centers on waterfalls along the Krka River, including the multi‑terraced Skradinski Buk and boat trips to Visovac Island monastery. Visitors hike wooden trails, photograph cascades and, where permitted, cool off in designated swimming areas.
Krka National Park protects the Krka River and a series of waterfalls, canyons and aquatic habitats in central Dalmatia, Croatia. The park is best known for its travertine cascades and clear river pools, with several accessible walkways and viewing points.
Principal attractions include the broad terraced cascade at Skradinski Buk and the upstream Roški Slap, both showcasing tufa-forming limestone barriers and step-like falls. Boardwalks and trails allow close views of the falls and the river’s karst landscape, and the park includes historic mills and traditional villages along its course.
The park was created to conserve the river’s ecology, geology and cultural sites and has been managed to balance visitor access with habitat protection; infrastructure such as viewing platforms and boat services link several key points. The river and falls have been shaped by karst geology and human settlement for centuries, with mill complexes and monasteries among the cultural features preserved within the park.
Krka National Park lies inland from the Adriatic coast in Šibenik-Knin County, a short drive from the town of Šibenik and within easy reach of Zadar and Split by road.
- Swimming rules: Swimming is permitted in designated areas at Skradinski Buk when allowed by park authorities; seasonal restrictions and closures may apply to protect the travertine and local wildlife.
What to See #
- Skradinski Buk: A widely visited travertine cascade on the Krka River characterised by broad stepped pools and travertine tufa formations, with visitor access and designated swimming areas at times set by park regulations.
- Roški Slap: A series of falls and river channels upstream from Skradinski Buk with historic mill sites and a different style of cascades and rock formations.
How to Get to Krka National Park #
Krka National Park (Skradinski Buk area) is easiest reached from the nearby town of Šibenik - the drive is short (roughly 15 km, about 20-30 minutes) and the park is signposted from Šibenik and the coastal road. The most common visitor route is to Skradin: park in Skradin and take the park boat shuttle from Skradin harbour to the Skradinski buk entrance (boat ride about 10-15 minutes). If you drive to the Lozovac parking area you can follow the boardwalk/footpath from the parking to Skradinski buk (about a 1.5 km walk).
Tips for Visiting Krka National Park #
- Arrive right at opening (or late afternoon) to see Skradinski buk with far fewer people; the Skradin boat shuttles and large tour groups concentrate around mid-day, so early/late visits give better light and quieter trails.
- If you're driving, use the Lozovac (Roški Slap) parking/entrance to access the elevated walkway down to Skradinski buk - it's the most direct paid-parking lot and avoids the busy waterfront boarding area in Skradin.
- Buy tickets online or at the park entrance and plan any boat trips to Visovac/upper falls in advance - the short sightseeing boats run on schedules and fill quickly when tour buses are in.
- Don't miss the lesser-visited walking routes toward Roški Slap and the ethnographic exhibits near the watermills; these branches are quieter and give different river views than the main waterfall platform.
Best Time to Visit Krka National Park #
Visit Krka National Park in late spring for strong waterfall flows and pleasant temperatures, or early autumn for fewer crowds while still good weather.
