Křivoklát Castle is a medieval Gothic castle in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic and one of the country’s historic royal castles. It is notable for its preserved Gothic structure and its long use as a royal residence, hunting base and later a state prison.

Key on-site features include the medieval palace and great hall, a high keep, restored defensive walls and towers, and museum displays of historic interiors and collections. Visitors use the castle’s towers and battlements for panoramic views and can tour the preserved rooms and exhibitions.

The castle was established in the medieval period and rebuilt and expanded in Gothic style during subsequent centuries; it later underwent restorations in the 19th and 20th centuries to preserve its historic fabric and present it as a museum.

Křivoklát sits in a wooded valley in Central Bohemia, within a forested national landscape west of Prague and accessible from regional towns in the area.

Křivoklát is about 50 km west of Prague. From Prague take regional trains toward Rakovník and alight at Křivoklát station (a short walk from the castle). Driving from Prague via road 61 and 244 takes roughly 45-60 minutes depending on traffic.

• If possible, join an English-language guided tour-the characterful guides tell grisly anecdotes and point out concealed stairways.
• Bring a flashlight for the dungeon passages; some corners remain dim despite modern lighting.
• Climb the Bergfrit (main tower) for the best views and notice the wear on the stone steps-centuries of feet have made them concave.
